Sunrise Highway
The Power of the DogSunrise Highway is a mountain road in the San Diego backcountry that carries Sean Callan and Nora Hayden away from the main highway during their flight. Its ascent, changing terrain, and dawn overlook give the fugitives a temporary pause from the immediate uncertainties of their journey; later, Sal Scachi also travels the road and turns off at a farm, linking the route to the practical search for transport.
Route and Setting
Sean Callan reaches Sunrise Highway after driving east on Interstate 8. He turns north onto it, and the road climbs in sharp switchbacks up the southern slope of Mount Laguna, passing the small town of Descanso before running along the mountain ridge. Pine forest lies on one side of the ridge, while desert stretches far below the other. Farther along, the forest gives way to chaparral and then grassland, and the pair reach a lake near the junction with Highway 79.
Callan and Hayden’s Journey
The road gives Callan and Hayden a brief interval together without resolving what their relationship will become. They have not kissed or made love, and neither knows what to call their closeness. On the ride, Hayden wears Callan’s oversized jacket, which she values more than the costly gifts other men have given her. At a pull-off, they watch the sunrise spread across the desert, then get back on the motorcycle and continue along the ridge toward the lake. The pause offers companionship and a shared view, but their future remains unsettled.
A Later Stop Along the Road
Sunrise Highway appears again when Sal Scachi is driving it and notices a run-down farm that resembles a used-car lot. He turns in and approaches the farm’s proprietor to ask about the vehicles. The scene shifts the road from a place of escape and contemplation to a route through which the characters pursue immediate, practical options; the evidence establishes the inquiry, but not whether Scachi obtains a vehicle.
